Evaluation Question 7 Answer

Looking back on your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from that to the full product?

Evaluation Question 7

I am now onto the last question of my evaluation. In this question I will be discussing the progression I have made throughout the process of creating my final product.

The question is:

Looking back on your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from that to the full product?

Evaluation Question 6 Answer

What have you learned about new technologies from the process of creating this product?

Evaluation Question 6

The next part of my evaluation is talking about what technologies i have used over the year to produce my final product as well as displaying my product online.

The question is:

What have you learned about new technologies from the process of creating this product?

Evaluation Question 5 Answer

How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted my audience through my front cover. Having two male models who will be found attractive by my target audience enabled me to attract both genders as males will relate to them as well as inspire to be like them and females will be attracted to them, drawing them to want to read further into their story. Their outfits represent the genre of music I have chosen to represent, the dark colours of black being typically associated with rock bands as well as the image of a bomb representing danger and rebellion which is also another stereotype of rock. When I took my photos I decided to get my models to pose quite neutrally, their positions give the impression that they’re not actually models, the closeness of the two show that they are actually in a band. They are facing the camera with almost blank expressions on their faces, one with their eyebrows slightly raised and the other with their mouth slightly open so some of his teeth are visible. This gives them a rather nonchalant expression, as if they don’t have to work too hard to make themselves look good in front of a camera. This slightly appeals to Marjorie Ferguson’s theory of the most common facial expression to be featured on a magazine however goes against the typical convention of a female model on the cover. The age of my models also fits in with my magazine as they fit the stereotypical image of a teenage band.

I also attracted my audience by my colour scheme as they fit the conventional colours which are associated with indie and rock music. The typical colours are usually red, white and black but I decided to add grey to my magazine to make it stand out more as white looked too plain. I have created a house style throughout my project by linking the colours with the genre of music as well as the readers interests.

Evaluation Question 5

The next part of the evaluation is discussing how i attracted my audience to my magazine and how i addressed the audience.

The question is:

How did you attract/address your audience?

Jacob's Video Response

Emily's Video Response

I asked Emily to look at my magazine and record herself answering my overall questionnaire to gain another opinion on my magazine. Emily is a 17 year old female so fits into my intended target audience which is why I asked her to take part in this task.

Evaluation Question 4 Answer

What would be the audience for your media product?

The primary target audience for my magazine is teenagers and young adults, 14-21 and will be quite equal with gender however the majority by a few will be female.

They will either have a job of their own after leaving school or be given money by their family so they can afford to pay £2.50 fortnightly to buy the magazine.

My secondary audience could really include anybody that is interested in the same genre of music my magazine is promoting that is outside of my target audience. There could also be readers that decide to buy my magazine just for a certain artist or feature instead of buying the magazine fortnightly.

Male: 47%

Female: 53%

Average Age: 17

Work Full Time: 5%
Work Part Time: 47%

Evaluation Question 4

The next part of my evaluation is talking about the audience for my magazine.

The question is:

What would be the audience for your media product?

Evaluation Question 3 Answer

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

After completing research earlier in my project, I think the media institution which would be most likely to publish my magazine would be IPC Media. This is because the only other music magazine they publish that is remotely similar to Haim is NME.

I know that NME is different to my magazine as it is targeted to a completely different audience, my target audience is of a much younger age. Even though IPC Media do publish a magazine called TeenNow which is targeted to the same age group as my magazine I know that this will not clash as the readers will appreciate completely different music as TeenNow is targeted to mainly females and is more of a pop genre.

I think IPC Media would be the best choice of media institutions as it would give them more of a range as they currently do not have an indie rock genre magazine that is aimed at such a young audience. At current times there’s not a large amount of competition for magazines of my genre so I think the institution would profit by quite a bit if they distributed my magazine to the public.

Evaluation Question 3

Question 3 of the evaluation is researching media institutions and finding which one would suit publishing my magazine. I have already made various posts earlier on in my project about different publishing companies that could be possible choices.

Here is the question:

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Evaluation Question 2 Answer

How does the media product represent social groups?

Evaluation Question 2

The second part of my evaluation is about which social groups my magazine presents.

The question is:

How does the media product represent social groups?

Double Page Spread Questionnaire Results

Here the results I have received from distributing a questionnaire on my feature article. I think overall these results are positive and I receive hardly any negative comments so I have decided to stick with the way i have presented it.

Double Page Spread Questionnaire

I have created this questionnaire to hand out to 100 people who I think fit my target audience to gain a response and feedback on my final double paged spread. Results will shortly follow.

Final Double Page Spread

Here is the final draft of my feature article.

To complete my article I have added a title, my article, a storyline, a chance to win something to engage my audience as well as the page numbers so the reader knows what page they are on.

Double Page Spread Update

Here is the updated version of my double paged spread. I have added images of my models and the next time I update it I will add text to the page for my article as well as a title. I will also hand out a questionnaire later on to find out my audiences response.

So far this is just the design of my feature article. I still have to add my written article as well as image and small things such as page numbers.

Final Contents Page

Here is the completed version of my contents page:

Contents Page Update

Here is the updated version of my contents page. After altering my cover page I had to change the small version of my front cover at the bottom right of the contents page so the two images would be different. After this my contents page will be complete.

Final Contents Page

Here is my final and completed version of my contents page. The changes I have made are; I have moved the main image upward slightly so it is inline with the text box as well as changed the small image of my completed front cover on the bottom right of the page. This now looks a lot more professional than before.

New Contents Page Image

I have decided to update my contents page as I felt as though I used my models too much throughout my magazine. I had also used one photo on my contents page that I had also used on my feature article so I have changed the main image to a photo of a male and female model with a non-conventional expression to make my contents page look more fun. Here is the Photo I have chosen to use, the result will be posted soon.

Updated Contents Page

Here is the updated product of my contents page. I have added more images as well as the subscribe option on the bottom left of the page after looking at my questionnaire results.

Contents Page Update

I have now added the new image onto my contents page and I am much more pleased with the result. I will now distribute a questionnaire to my target audience and decide if I need to make any more final changes.

Final Front Cover

After my previous changes I have now decided that my front cover is complete. Here is the finished product:

Front Cover Update

Once looking at my finished product I realised there was something didn't look right on my front cover. I have decided to change the position of the four images on the bottom of my page and add text to show they are posters that are included in my magazine.

Front Cover Questionnaire Results

Here are the results I created from the questionnaire I distributed about my front cover:

I have decided to create this questionnaire and distribute it to 100 people who I think fit in the range of my target audience.

Here is my completed front cover:

Front Cover Update

I have improved my front cover by adding story headlines as well more images as posters to the bottom of the page.
There are empty spaces on my magazine which I still haven't filled. I still need to add a price, a barcode and the issue number of the magazine.

Front Cover

This is the start of my front cover. I have included the main image I have decided to use, I used photoshop to delete the background from the image by using the eraser tool. I made the image fit the size of my front cover and made it cover part of the title which is a typical magazine cover convention.

Now all I need to do is add more images as posters, create a background. I also need to add story headlines onto my cover.

Article Photos

Here are the photos I have chosen to use for my feature article:

Contents Page Photos

I have also taken my photos for my contents page. I decided to go for a different theme for my images this time, I didn't want them to be as serious as the ones I chose for my cover page. These are the photos I have decided to use:

Front Cover Photos

I have recently taken the photos I am going to use for my magazine's front cover, contents page and double-paged article. Here are the photo's I will be using for my front cover:

This is the main image I have chosen to use for my front cover. I originally decided to use three models for my images but after taking them I discovered that one did not fit the theme of the images or my magazine.

I took other images to use on the footer of my magazine. Each photo I have used the models are looking at the camera with a similar pose.

Proposal Form

Genre: I chose to create an indie/rock magazine. I chose to do this because although there are a lot of magazines with the same genre on the market at the moment I think there is a space for a more current magazine which will promote more artists. I will keep to the general conventions by keeping a theme of rock and indie throughout my magazine.

Target Audience: I have decided to make my magazine to target a mixed gender audience aged 14-20 years old. I intend to make my magazine unisex by keeping the house style the same with a colour scheme of black, white and dark red. These colours appeal to my unisex audience while representing the genre of my magazine.

Major conventions: My magazine will follow the typical conventions of a magazine. It will include a masthead, subtitles, photographs. banners etc. This is so my magazine looks professional and will fit in with other magazines on the market.

Model Permission

After choosing my models I asked each person for their permission to use the photos I took of them for my magazine. I showed the models the photographs before publishing them to make sure they were comfortable with the images being used. I did this to make myself and the model more at ease of the photographs being shown to the public, just to make sure they approve of the images of themselves.

Publishing Companies Part 2 - IPC Media

A quote from the IPC Media website:
‘With more than 60 iconic media brands, IPC creates content for multiple platforms, across print, online, mobile, tablets and events.  As the UK's leading consumer magazine publisher we engage with 26m UK adults - almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men. Our award winning portfolio of websites reaches over 25 million users globally every month.’

The three publishing divisions of IPC Media are: IPC Connect, IPC Inspire and IPC Southbank.
IPC Inspire, has a wealth of leisure brands including Country LifeHorse & HoundRugby World and Decanter, as well as lifestyle brands includingNutsMousebreaker and NME. IPC Inspire targets the market for men so this could be a good publisher for my magazine as my target audience includes men.
However, IPC Connect may be better as it targets the mass market’s women. Though IPC Southbank also targets women, I wouldn’t publish my magazine with IPC Southbank as it targets upmarket women whereas my magazine is targeted towards both teenage girls and boys.
This magazine publisher could be a bit too sophisticated for my genre of music magazine.
